It needs to be said right up front that this machine is not one of those you might find in a discount office supply store. List price was $3600, though it could often be found after discounts for anywhere from $2500 – $2900. At any rate, this unit works for a well at putting out black-and-white monochrome product and will also fit neatly on any desktop in a small business. Dimensions come in at 18″ x 17″ x 12″.
As far as print speeds go, this Xerox multifunction printer puts out pages at around eight ppm of product, which is fairly good as far as multifunction scope. It connects to a PC with industry standard wired technologies and can hook up to a network just as easily. It uses standard parallel ports for interfacing, which was what was offered at the time of release of this laser printer.
Resolution is more than acceptable at 600 dpi by 600 dpi for the kind of laser printer duties it is expected to handle. This particular model in the Xerox WorkCentre line of machines does not offer PostScript support, but that’s not a big deal. Paper size that can be handled is good, with it taking in up to 8. 5″ x 14″ and all standard letter size paper in addition to legal and envelope sizes.
Total storage capacity for paper comes in at 250 sheets in a single feeder paper tray. The recommended duty cycle is around 1500 pages and this unit supplies one Xerox WorkCentre XE90 toner cartridge good for that amount. As far as other functions go, the fax machine capability is fairly standard at 14.4 Kbps through a modem. The flatbed scanner is single pass at 400 dpi by 600 dpi.
From the time one tasks a print job to the time the first page emerges is around 10 seconds, making this more than an acceptable unit for most small business needs. It doesn’t include expansion bays or slots, so remember that should this machine be contemplated for expansion into a larger network or the like. Industry-standard IEEE 1284 parallel ports are the norm along with a standard modem connection that runs through phone lines.
As with most of its machines, Xerox has built this one to utilize Windows operating systems running up through 2000 in addition to Windows NT 4.0 for networks, which makes it a good choice in an office environment that uses a small network. There is the standard one-year service and support, as well as an extended service packages available for a fee.
As far as memory storage capabilities go, the fax machine included with this multifunction can hold up to 120 pages of incoming or outgoing faxes should it run out of paper while nobody is paying attention. It can do just about everything, allowing a person to print, scan and copy, while handling incoming and outgoing faxes at the same time. Also, a user can scan a document in and immediately fax it.
