Desktop Defender 2010 is a rogue software, a program dedicated to hurt your computer and to steal your money. After the fake scan is done the user is then prompted to register and purchase the product to remove the results. It seems this program is from the same makers as the Conrtoaviro program because it shares the same interface just with different graphics and name. It has some very nice Windows vista design elements. The purpose of this is to make it more credible. It is very common for programs like this to disable the Windows Task Manager and other similar programs. You will find your you do not have your computer control anymore.
It will pose problems to your Internet connection, including not being able to update your anti-virus programs, or similar programs. Be careful of the following methods used by malware like Desktop Defender 2010 to propagate themselves and to infect computers:
Fake online scanners. They will claim to be new, free and more. They will ask you to download and run a small application, in fact it will be the malware disguised.
Fake codecs. This is a common method for malware like Desktop Defender 2010 to infect system.
Such fake codecs can be installed through what is called a drive by download. Many legit websites out there have been hacked to install these kinds of programs onto your system with out the owner ofthe site even knowing about it. Example would be you were browsing a given website and the website push a download unto your computer. There are cases were even updated antivirus clients still let through some viruses and the Desktop Defender 2010 is no exception. What was pushed… was the malware disguised. This threat can be very hard to remove and many of us will need an expert to help out. This repair company is very well known and repairs computers online for an honest price. Once downloaded and installed, Desktop Defender 2010 will start to create many fake files. The more the better. This threat will add it’s self into the registry so it auto starts on boot. ! On the next boot, it will do a system scan, it is a fake scan. The Desktop 2010 program will show you a report that has many fake scan results. The whole purpose of this program is to scare you into making a purchase of the bogus client. The malware saying it is but a scanner and to clean your system, you need the full version. Given that the scans were fake you should already know that this program is nothing more then a scam. Do not fall victim to this scam and never purchase this fake security client. In most cases those infected with Desktop Defender 2010 will find they can not run real security clients and many websites may be blocked. Often times this client disables the real security software on your computer. As to accessing others online, it is also blocked. Others application, like System Restore and the Registry Editor, are disabled once your computer is infected by the rogue program. In my testing of this threat we also had our browser settings highjacked and were getting re-directs to the sales page of this program.
You should first, rather than believing this fake program, remove Desktop Defender 2010 . To remove such malware you will need to first terminate the running process called DesktopDefender2010.exe. Once this is done you should be able now remove most of the traces located at Documents and SettingsAll UsersStart MenuPrograms and Program FilesDesktop Defender 2010.
