Although best known for it’s powerful graphics workstations and massive servers, SGI regularly produces related pieces of high technology. Back in 1998, SGI gave the display industry a boost by introducing the ground breaking 1600SW display.
The Silicon Graphics 1600SW is a LCD display with a resolution of 1600×1024. It was, and remains, the only display to offer a full 16:10 aspect ratio, allowing detailed work for digital effects artists, as well as being able to display two A4 pages of text side by side. The 1600SW won several awards for it’s innovative design, and the display’s brightness and high resolution still places it at the top end of display design, over 10 years later.
The display used the all digital OpenLDI interface, which required custom graphics cards. Several models of SGI workstation had the required connector either builtin, or available as an add-in card. Companies like 3D Labs also produced dedicated graphics cards with the special connector, allowing the 1600SW display to be used with standard PCs.
Since it’s introduction, several companies have also produced convertors, allowing DVI video cards to be used with the OpenLDI interface. Over a decade after it’s introduction, the SGI 1600SW remains a high quality display that is very sought after by graphics artists.
Temperature Humidity Chambers are available from various chamber manufacturers such as Thermotron, Tenney, Espec, Blue M, Despatch, Ransco, TestEquity, Associated Environmental, Bemco, Cincinnati Sub Zero, BMA, Lunaire etc. when sourcing a Temperature Humidity Chamber, there are various issues to consider amongst which are:
(a) The internal volume The inside dimensions of the temperature humidity chamber. This will be decided by the size of the product to be tested.
(b)Temperature Range needed for the test you wish to perform. The maximum range of a Temperature Humidity Chamber is usually from -73C to +200C. However, to accomplish this complete range the chamber will need to have two compressors in what is referred to as a cascade refrigeration system. If only one compressor is used, then temperatures down to approximately -35C is possible. Take into account that humidity testing can not be performed below 0C (freezing point) and that any testing below 0C will be possible for temperature only testing (humidity function will be disabled). Temperature Humidity Chambers are also available without any refrigeration at all. The lowest temperatures at which testing can be performed without refrigeration is usually about 12C above room temperature.
(c) Humidity Range needed for the test you wish to perform. Although most Temperature Humidity Chambers claim that they have a humidity range of 20% to 95%, what is often not taken into account is the temperature range at which these humidity levels can be controlled. For example, at 25C, the lowest humidity obtainable by most temperature humidity chambers that include refrigeration will be about 45% (unless a dehumidifier package is installed). As one increases the temperature above 25C, lower humidity levels than 45% can be controlled. Manufacturers normally provide graphs indicating the temperature versus humidity range of the chamber.
(d) Water Recycling System - If you do not have a drain available to drain the excess water used to create the humidity, you should consider a water recycling system consisting of a water storage container, recycling pump and demineralizer cartridge. This will recycle the water and a drain will not be required. Important - demineralized water should be used for Temperature Humidity Chambers, not deionized water which can harm the interior of the chamber (usually stainless steel) and other components!
