The human brain contains billions of nerves that link it to various body parts making it the most complex body organ. It administers both voluntary and involuntary muscles to support bodily functions, and it is also responsible for developing different facets of human life.
For nearly all life stages, it was proven that the female brain is 10% smaller compared with male brain. Brain size of a six-year old child is 95% of the size of an adult brain. Though a six-year old child can have as big a brain as a full-grown adult, it does not mean that the child has the same level of thinking as the adult. Brain advancement is at its maximum upon reaching puberty stage.
Most brain cells are to be hard-wired for sports activities if a person engaged in athletics during adolescence. The same goes for music and academics. But video games seem to be the most prevalent activity for adolescents during this stage.
Several researches were already done regarding the relationship of video games and brain development. In early studies done during 1980s, only minimal correlations were found, and most have contradicting results. Its outcomes may be of less help for that time, but it enabled modern studies to have more useful results.
Recent Japanese studies revealed that video games can greatly develop only certain brain portion. Those portions are greatly responsible for vision and movement. The frontal lobe, largest area of the brain responsible for emotional and intellectual development, was left behind.
Researchers were able to monitor brain segment usage in real-time by using digital imaging techniques. In the test, one group was made to play video games while another group was to undergo Kraepelin test wherein one-digit numbers are to be added for a certain period of time. The first group showed brain activities and usage in parts concerned for vision and movement. The second group exhibited extensive brain usage for both left and right hemisphere, though the only segment needed for mathematical computation is the left hemisphere.
Further studies revealed that number exercises are more stimulating than music. Reading was also found to be effective for frontal lobe improvement.
Brain cells might have poor quality as the person gets older if the frontal lobe will be given minimal usage during its development peak in adolescence stage. Recent observations caused the worry of underperformance in intellectual aspect for the next generation. This is the most dreaded scenario by the researchers.
Reactions were given by common gamers and students alike regarding the study. Tactical and strategy games might cause brain usage for some other part aside from vision and movement. But the study did not specify the particular game genre used during research. Some interesting games to study might be halo odst for sale or used street fighter iv. To find out what games are the best for different types of skills you can use video gamer as a reference. For some gamers, they were still able to perform good in academics while maintaining their gaming skills and activities, while the effects of video games seem to affect emotional areas of some gamers. Because of this, the study might have gained another useful input for future video games studies – its relationship to emotional development.
