These days a lot of people are redesigning their kitchens. Some just need a change of scenery and others have taken on new hobbies like cooking and baking. They need larger spaces, better countertops, or additional storage space. In other case, a family knows their kitchen is out of style and they need to upgrade things for resale or for personal comfort. An upgraded kitchen adds value to a house. One of the main things people look for when shopping for a home is a comfortable, modern kitchen. However, homeowners are expressing themselves with kitchen remodels. Instead of expected colors, they are warming the space with stained woods and dark marble countertops. Flooring is no longer of the cheap peel and stick variety and people are installing travertine tile or stone tile. Some are using marble, as well. All of these unique features add a modern, personalized feel to the space that spruces it up. If you are considering upgrades to your kitchen, plan to have some fun, get creative, and be sure to include expected features.
Choose your paint colors wisely when you want to make a change in your kitchen. Instead of choosing the regular hues, pull unexpected hues from the patterns in the countertops or cabinets. While many folks expect to see bright and cheery colors in a kitchen, you can take a different approach. A deep forest green complements a mahogany cabinets. A splash of the unexpected like orange or lime green can still brighten a kitchen but surprise all who enter. You can also use a textured paint you might typically expected in the living room, bedroom, or den. Using a neutral with a mottled texture would create interest in the kitchen and give it character.
After painting is done, look for other places you can add surprises. Unexpected pops of color add variety without commiting to anything long term. Pots and pans, small appliances, and even refrigerators and dishwashers are coming in richer, brighter colors these days. Instead of just white, liven things up with a cherry red stand mixer or royal blue toaster. You also have a lot of options for textiles like rugs, dish towels, and pot holders. You can choose a theme from the variety of pictures and cute designs, or you can complementary solid that enhances the other colors and features of the kitchen. In addition to standard items you find in a kitchen, consider using art to liven things up. It is a surprise, but prints and framed pictures displayed in the kitchen add a lot to the design and create interest. You can even use sculpture and painting in the room if you would like. This works best in large kitchens where you can display them away from the cooking space so you do not risk their getting dirty.
Working in a kitchen that is well designed and unique makes a house a home. Creating unique design features in a kitchen is a great way to liven things up and increase the value of your home.
